Lets get physcal, Cardio tennis, From the players perspective

Lets get physcal, Cardio tennis, From the players perspective, by Colleen Oakley, Freelance Writer, Public Relations, Contributor to the Marie Clare, Jezzebel, The Sunday Paper & more.
The only appeal that tennis has ever had for me is the thought that if I played enough,my body might start to look like that of Anna Kournikova. With that ill-conceived goal in mind, I signed up for lessons a few years ago.
My coach was good; a sweet, older gentleman who showed me how to correctly hold the racquet, the right way to hit the ball—forehand and
backhand—and how to volley. My skills weresurprisingly not that bad. But with all
the time we spent on fundamentals, I barely broke a sweat during the hour
of instruction. At this rate, I’d never be able to fit
one leg in Anna’s tiny pleated skirt. That’s why a few weeks ago,
when I saw a park bench on Monroe advertising Fitness with Jeff’s cardio
tennis class, I was intrigued. I like tennis, but I’d really like to get a goodworkout while I’m at it. I e-mailed Jeff Michaud AKA or Actually better known as Fitness with Jeff, on his Web site, and he
immediately responded, inviting me out for a
group lesson that weekend. I arrived early at the tennis
court in a Brookhaven condo (Jeff travels all over the city) as one of his
students, Peter, was warming up. I found out he was a longtime client
of Jeff’s and asked what kept him coming back for more. “It’s a great
workout,” he said. “And Jeff’s a really funny guy; always joking around.
Like today, he said he was going to....

Tennis Hitting drill, hitting off a tennis wall

Hello Atlanta Tennis group, a great drill for working on your game when you don't have a partner, I love and even use with my tennis clients is simply hitting off a tennis wall, like I did with clients just hit off the retaining wall at the courts we were at. I find hitting Volley or half-volley is best the most useful drill, Simply either drop feed or air feed to yourself just keep the ball in play as long as possible. This is great for working on volley techique and tennis quickness. One thing to keep track of is to make sure that you keep your wrist and this will keep the the tennis ball in play. This is a great drill to work on your tennis volley swing and tennis quickness and tennis agility drill.

Tennis elbow, thoughts and solutions

My Client Kim was having problems with elbow from playing to much tennis, This was caused by over use and some techinque issues, i was able to assist her with better tennis swing mechanics and to a lesser extent on some exercises and some strenthing exercises to build up her arms. The other part is to go to specialists, She has gone to many different physcal therapist for Rehab in the past and she swears by these guys at Atlanta Body Mechanics, 550 Peachtree Street, Suite 1760 Atlanta, Georgia 30308 404.817.0734. In addition to her elbow she had some issues with shins, ankle and back, they were able to help on all these problems.

Tennis swing tip, hit with the other hand

Hello Atlanta tennis group, wanted to put out a usual tip for working on your game that many teaching pro's like myself use for both reenforcing good fundementals (really have to think how to do the swing correctly when trying to teach yourself how to do it from the other side) and also to avoid repetitvie motion insuries like tennis elbow and the alike: hit with our other hand, for right handers like myself hit with your left hand, for lefties hit with your right hand, this will help you to train your brain in a different way which i feels reinforces good fundementals and avoids injuries. Pro's do this because if you teach like me some days for 6 or 8 hours, giving your dominant side a break it probably needs, also gives my playes a different angle of attack for them to work on. This also works well with kids, kids break arms all the time, i just switch the kid around and he or she can learn to hit from the other side. This techinque can working with almost any sport or activity, give it a try, best to do it with less skilled player, I did it with my kid clients, they tend not to care as much.

Staying in Shape for tennis during the winter, it gets cold in Atlanta

Hello Atlanta Tennis group, my clients ask me all the time what they should do to stay ing shape during the off season from tennis. Alot of my clients main form of exercise is playing tennis matches, Alta tennis, round robin tennis and tennis drills, maybe even cardio tennis. My recommendations as a personal trainer are: 30-40 minutes of aerobic activity each day, ie treadmill, elipitical machine, bike riding, swimming, running, walking or Jogging are great to etc. As for wieght barring exercise, I recommend free wieghts and machine exercises every other day, Crunches and ab (abdominial work) 5-7 days a week. for exercise ideas please check out my personal training blog which has several different programs.

Tennis tip for forehand and backhand Nov 12, Swing track, important to the tennis swing

Hello Atlanta Tennis: My weekly tip is to find your swing track, this is the natural curve that you make during your swing, the idea is to be able to re-create over and over the same track of your arm. The idea is to move your feet into the track of your arm on your backhand and forehand tennis swing, most people adjust mostly using there swing to make adjustments, this does not work very well causing all kinds of errors. When you get a chance just swing the rackey in your hand over and over again using the same track. If you do this and find your track I'm sure you will improve your percentage of balls in and where you want them.

Hitting tennis balls on the run

Hello Atlanta Tennis group and Friends, I was referred by a client to a very cool online tennis magazine that I thought my readers would enjoy, I have enclosed a short passage from an article that I thought you might be interested, seemed like a pretty cool article, I enclosed the tennis article and the link to tennis player.net below, please enjoy...Jeff

Pat Dougherty

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nicole Vaidisova lunges and transfers her weight in a semi-open stance.
Hitting effortlessly and powerfully on the run is one of the hallmarks of tennis greatness. Slow reactions, sluggish recoveries, and moving with the center of gravity too high, can make the quickest athletes appear slow.

On the other hand, when your intensity and pulse rate is at performance levels and your movement is synced with the tempo of play, the strokes flow seamlessly with the movement.

In this article we will take a look at how you can develop this same ability for yourself. To do this we will explore several techniques for moving through the strokes and also building recovery footwork into the follow through of your strokes.
The rest of the article is out on: http://www.tennisplayer.net/

Group tennis lessons for Kids

Group tennis lessons for Kids
In my last article I discussed the pleasure I get from working with young tennis players, and things to think about as far as what to think about before you sign your child up for Tennis instruction. In this Article I would like to talk about group tennis and fitness for kids. In the last article I spoke about the right age for private sessions, and I think the age that seems to me to be the most appropriate is 7-8 is about as early as I recommend for the average child from the terms of maturity and physical and psychological development for private tennis instruction. That being said there are kids that will benefit and grasp the techniques at a very early age, even as young as 3 or 4. I have seen a lot of parents through away there money, having there 6 year old taking privates lesson. It turns into a very expensive baby sitting. For kids 4 and over group tennis and fitness classes makes the most sense to me. For real young children (3-5 yrs of age) a lot of the group tennis sessions are spent doing non tennis skills, doing exercises like jumping jacks, lunges, arm circles, stretching, throwing balls etc to work on motor skills. I then would move on to mock tennis swings and only then move onto hitting tennis balls to the kids, I also tend to use soft foam tennis balls, they come in slower and if they get hit or stepped on don’t cause any harm. For the groups I like to keep the kids separated by no more then 2 years within the same group, just too much variation based on age of the players. The smaller the group the better, I like to have groups of around 3-5 kids, allows me to give each player the attention they deserve. This keeps the cost reasonable for the parent and gives the child the good degree of attention. From there is the child seems to enjoy the group lessons, and hopefully shows promise, Private tennis sessions along with group classes make a lot of sense. Have fun!

Tennis serve technique

Tennis Serve: Tips and tricks of the proper serve
Stand side on to the court, hold the ball between thumb and first two finger tips and toss the ball a little higher then the high point that you can hold your racquet up to. On the toss I tell my clients to picture the your self as the Statue on Liberty and toss the ball at the highest point that you can hold up your toss hand up to and release the ball like you might let go of a small bird.
One thing to watch out for is not to stretch to far and simply toss the ball about 8-10 inches in front of your front foot. For the Right handed tennis player picture a giant clock in the sky and toss the ball at 1:00 or off the right post for both the Duce or the AD side of the court. For the lefty tennis player just the opposite, toss the ball at left post or at a giant clock, this time 11:00. I like to finish my tennis server like a Football quarterback where again for the Righty the right foot should follow the right arm over finishing into the tennis court.
